What is an Auxiliary Police Officer (APO)?

APO's are civic minded citizens who volunteer their time to The Police Department. They serve as the "eyes and ears" of the NYPD and provide additional police presence by conducting patrols in UNIFORM. In fact just the mere presence of uniformed police officers is enough to deter would be criminals.

APO's are issued NYPD uniforms WITHOUT COST (same uniform as regular police officers!), Shields (a seven point silver star) and an NYPD photo ID, and they are equipped with Police Radios (exact same radios as regulars) when on patrol. This means you are directly linked to "Central" (don't worry we train you how to communicate with the central dispatcher)...and yes..the regular cops (Members of the Service.aka MOS) respond with haste to your call..at times before you're finished transmitting!!).

APO's in Central Park:
APO's are a part of the Central Park Precinct Auxiliary Police Unit and are an integral part of the Central Park community.
The Auxiliary Police Program is under the NYPD's Auxiliary Police Section. APO's conduct foot, bicycle, segway, and car (RMP) patrol in Central Park (Central Park Precinct).
We also assist The Police during public events, such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, Summerstage, and other concerts (i.e. Dave Matthews last summer).
